About this meditation
Spelling Bee Meditation gives your attention a simple sequence to follow. Listen to a word, rest for three seconds, and follow its letters as each is spoken and underlined. After another three-second pause, hear the whole word again, then rest for three seconds before the next word. You can spell along silently or simply listen. There is no score, no test, and nothing to get right.
You might choose this practice when you would like a small, structured task instead of an open-ended period of silence. The shift from a whole word to individual letters and back offers repeated places to bring your attention. When your mind wanders, gently return to the next sound. Treat the pauses as room to breathe naturally; this app is an attention exercise, with no promise of a particular result.
This is a modern exercise, not a traditional meditation lineage. Its educational inspiration is the spelling bee: spelling competitions were common by the mid-eighteenth century, and Benjamin Franklin recommended them in a 1750 school proposal. Its reflective side has a loose parallel with mantra practices, which use repeated sounds or words as a focus for attention. Here, changing everyday words replaces a fixed mantra, and competition gives way to a gentle listening rhythm.

Journal entries and an unfinished draft are saved in this browser’s local storage on this device when available. They are not sent by this app to a server. Other people using the same browser profile may be able to read them. You can export your journal or delete all entries and the draft in the Journal panel. Clearing browser data may also erase them; private browsing and local-file storage behavior vary.
Speech is provided by your browser and operating system. Some voices may use an online speech service and send spoken text to that provider, under its privacy policy. Only practice words, letters, and the explanation are passed to speech; journal text is never spoken or sent to the speech service. Choose a device-installed offline voice when available if you prefer local speech.
